Give Me Two Minutes and I’ll Teach You How to Do a Window Display
Whether you are setting up a new store display for a promotion of your existing products or you are just starting to set up your new store for a grand opening, it is important to know these basic steps on how to do a window display:
1. Learn the basics about window display.
It is important that before you proceed to the initial process of setting up a new shop window display, you have the basic ideas about it.
Learn the elements of effective window display, study the principles of effective window display, understand the purpose of shop windows and know your own processes and work flow. Basic thing are very important to accomplish complicated tasks.
2. Decide what theme you are going to implement.
Should this theme be applied in the whole shop or only in some areas of the shop? Should it be for a season that will last for few months like Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter? Or a holiday that will last for few weeks like Christmas, Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri? Or just special day that will only last for few days like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day?
Your window display theme will help you find the materials will you set the time frame when to finish your window display project.
3. Conceptualize and make a sketch of your display.
You can use CAD software if you are familiar with some of them but oftentimes, if CAD is not required, pencil and paper is the quick option on sketching up a display plan. How big should your display be and how the display will be done are included on this step.
Do a research on necessary materials that you can use which will fit with the budget and look for some inspiration from window display images in the web so that you can create extraordinary display.
4. Prepare your materials for display.
This includes making and gathering of props, preparing visual merchandising tools and materials like glue gun, ladder and lights and choosing which items are to be included in your display.
I personally advised that you make a list of tools and materials you needed base on theme that you have chosen so that collecting those thing will not take much of your time.
5. Start setting up your display.
Safety first; you cannot finish setting up your window display if you are seriously injure after falling off the ladder or priced by some pointed objects in your display area.
Work as tidy as you can especially if you are working at the place where there are many customers passing every moment. Put everything in order and clean the area as you go. If you can, cover the whole display area until you finish setting up your display.
The steps I have provided above is good if you are the owner of the shop, but if you working as visual merchandiser for big companies, you need to ask for approval for each decision that you are going to make – approval for theme, approval for the design, approval for the costs of the materials and so on.
