How to Create Photoshop CS5 Brushes, Custom and High Resolution
The problem with free set of ready-to-load Photoshop Brushes available online are the low resolution and the inclusion of the different brushes which you actually do not like.

In a set of 20 grunge brushes, for example, maybe there are five to ten brushes which you would only like to use but the other 15 or 10 brushes which you do not like will also be added into you system once you load the said set of brush.
The worse thing sometimes is that one of the brushes is the name of the name of the brushes’ author.
Good news. It is actually very easy to create your own set of Photoshop CS5 brushes.
Please focus you attention here for very few minutes and learn how to make your own CS5 brushes.
1. Create Your Own Grunge Brushes on Photoshop CS5
Launch your Adobe Photoshop CS5 the open a new file (Ctrl + N). Set the size to 2,000 x 1,500 pixels with white background. Never set the dimension of your art board to above 2,500 pixels because it cannot be defined as brush preset by Adobe Photoshop.
If you want, you cant set you art board to 1,000 x 2,500px to have a high resolution brush but on this tutorial I recommend 1,000 x 1,000px so that it would be lighter to manipulate.
On your art board, you can start painting some BLACK dirt in whatever form you wish it to be because “grunge” is “dirt’ just like this.
The other way to create a good grunge brushes is to take photos of a stain on the floor on the table or wherever you find it. Covert the photo into Grayscale then adjust the contrast until you will achieve best two colors, black and white, something like this below. This is a mud on the floor which I captured using the camera of my hand phone.

2. Define Brush Preset…
Flatten (Menu > Layer > Flatten Image) what you have created in number 1.
After you have created what you brush looks like and have flatten it, you have to define it as brush preset so that it will become a part of Photoshop plug-in.
On the menu bar, click Edit, move you mouse pointer downward then find and click Define Brush Preset…. The ‘Name Brush’ window will pop-up; enter your desired name for you brush. You can name it (YourName) Grunge Brush.
3. Check Your New Brush on the Brush Preset Picker
Click the Brush Tool (B) then right-click your mouse. The Brush Preset picker will pop-up and your new brush is last on the list.
Free Photoshop Grunge Brushes
As bonus to this tutorial, I have here few high resolution ready-to-define Photoshop grunge brushes which you can use for free.
All you need to do is to download these files, open it in you Photoshop then do the Step No.2 above.

I really don’t have the time to create my own brush. I always ending up downloading and installing custom brushes for my photoshop application. I wish I have the skills and patience you have to create your own brushes.

Thanks for the tutorial. Didn’t know we can make our own brushes in Photoshop. I seldom use the brushes as I use Photoshop mainly for photo editing these days.
