How to Make Ginkgo Biloba Autumn Leaves Using Crepe Paper – a.k.a. Maidenhair Tree Autumn Leaves

By on September 12, 2012 — Updated on December 4, 2014

Ginkgo Biloba Autumn leaves are golden yellow. The leaves are fan-shaped which look like the pinnae of the maidenhair fern, and  the tree which is also called Maidenhair Tree is a symbol of longevity for Chinese, and a symbol of resilience and peace for Japanese.

On this tutorial, you will learn the easy way to create Ginkgo Biloba Autumn leaves using crepe paper. You can use this project as props for you next window display,  indoor display or any visual merchandising project  for Autumn. Let us get started.

Tools and Materials

  • Golden Yellow Crepe Paper
  • Dried Twigs
  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors

Note: The quantity of your crepe paper and twigs will depend on how many Ginkgo Biloba Autumn leaves you are planning to make.

Procedures – Ginkgo Biloba Autumn Leaves

Step 1. Cut your crepe paper into 2.5in x 2.5in (see Figure 1a) then trim one of the sides unevenly (see Figure 1b) to resemble uneven edge of the real Ginkgo Biloba leaves.

Step 2.  Pinch the cut crepe paper halfway then twist it with your thumb and pointing finger. See Figure 2a, 2b and 2c below. Your leaf will look like that on Figures 2c.

Step 3. Repeat the Steps 1 and 2 to create more Ginkgo Biloba Autumn leaves as many as you can – depending on the size of project you wanted to make.  For this tutorial, I only created 20 leaves to finish one small twig with artificial leaves.

Step 4. If you think that you have created enough leaves, glue each leaf into the dried twigs. Make sure to make cluster of leaves just like how the real Ginkgo Biloba Autumn leaves look like. See the area of the image below that is being pointed by an arrow.

Below is what your project would looks like when you are done. As what I have said, this project is composed of 20 leaves.

This a perfect project for Autumn! Making both creative and cost-friendly props is big help for retailers who wanted to have beautiful window display yet do not want to have big expenses.
