How to Avoid Missing Files in Adobe Illustrator
“Could not find the liked file “name of the file.jpg”. Choose Replace to select another file or Ignore to leave the link unchanged.” Then you have the option to Replace, Ignore, Cancel or Apply to all.
This the message the welcome you when I send you open an .ai file with linked files that are moved to other places, into other folder, other drive or other computer or when the file is sent to a printing company for printing.
Almost the same thing with happen to the fonts in your design you open you file form a new computer which has now installed font similar to what you have used on your design.
To avoid this problem, follow these steps:
- Convert your text into outlines – this is similar to rastirized object. Right-click on the text box then select “Create Outlines”. After creating outlines, you cannot edit the text anymore so make sure that you have the back-up of your original design.
- Do the step one to all the text in our design.
- Save a copy of your design by going to the Menu > File > Save a Copy… then find a location where you want to save your file, and then click ‘OK’.
- When the Illustrator Options window will pop, look for the option where you can check the “Include Linked File…” then click ‘OK’.
Done.
This process saves includes all the necessary into a single .ai file which the file size bigger.
Another way to avoid missing files is to save all the fonts, photos, graphics and other materials that you used in your design into a single folder. Whenever you transport the design, make sure to include the whole folder. You can easily relink the files when needed.
